Adopted on Tuesday in New York, the resolution marks a step forward in implementing the "UN80 Initiative", a comprehensive reform effort to make the UN more effective and cohesive in an increasingly complex global landscape.
Since 1946, key UN bodies have adopted over 40,000 resolutions, decisions, and presidential statements covering peace and security, humanitarian assistance, development, and human rights. But the growing volume of mandates has created many challenges, including an expanding workload of reports and meetings, while limiting the UN’s ability to monitor and evaluate effectiveness.
The new resolution marks the first time the UN has introduced a more structured approach to initiating, developing, implementing, and evaluating missions.
