Speaking at a White House press conference as the conflict between US-Israel and Iran enters its second month, Trump said the US might withdraw from Iran “very soon,” suggesting such a move would help bring down elevated fuel prices.
“All I have to do is to leave Iran, and we will be doing that very soon,” he said, adding that a withdrawal could take place within 2 to 3 weeks and would lead to a sharp decline in fuel prices.
Asked whether Iran would need to reach a deal for Washington to end its military campaign, Trump said the US would withdraw once it determined that Iran no longer had the capability to develop nuclear weapons, regardless of whether an agreement was reached. He also raised the possibility of a peace deal in the near term, saying such a process could unfold quickly.
Trump said the US would not intervene in the Strait of Hormuz, adding that countries reliant on the route for oil and gas shipments should ensure their own security. He said the waterway could be secured even without US involvement.
