The decision was agreed upon by the host country China and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) after two months discussions.

The 19th ASIAD was originally scheduled for September this year. However, on May 6, the OCA said that it was forced to postpone the Games due to the complicated situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in China.
